New Years Weekend

This Sunday 12/31, we wind up 2017 with a new spot, Breadcrafters Bakery on North Tatum.

There will also be a pickup ride on Monday Jan 1, destination nCounter in Tempe. In order to avoid the cold AND the drunks coming home at daybreak, let's start at 9:30 AM at Granada (Intellicast says it should be about 55 degrees when we start out).

See you Sunday and/or Monday!

Sunday December 24 - U.S. Egg

It's been a whole month since I've last been to Granada. Looks like this Sunday is a go, no rain in the forecast. I am 72 miles short of my mileage goal for 2017, so it looks like I should easily make it.

Destination this Sunday U.S. Egg at 7th St. and Greenway. Hope to see you all at the park!

Sunday December 3

Deidre sent out the December schedule, it's posted over there on the left. First up is a new one, EGGstacy.

I won't be there this week, nor next week for Moon Valley Cafe.  Take a look at the MAG map (download it from here) and be prepared. I promise to be back on December 17. See ya then!

Sunday November 19

Destination is Randy's in Scottsdale, remember they DO NOT accept any credit or debit cards- cash only.

It is my intention to ride Sunday, after doing El Tour de Tucson on Saturday. We'll see how that works out...

November Schedule Posted

First up is NY Bagels 'N Bialys this Sunday. See ya then!

Sunday Oct 22 - Oink

This Sunday, our destination is Oink across from Paradise Valley Mall. Dedrie writes in this month's schedule that no reservations are accepted, but they will assist us specially when we arrive.

That being said, if they are jammed up with people when we get there, we can jet over to Chompie's on the other side of PV Mall.

See y'all on Sunday!

October schedule posted

First up is The Henry this Sunday October 1. Two important things: the start time now changes to 7:30 AM for the winter season. And this week I am not available to lead, so you gotta find it on your own.

Here's a picture we took last Sunday as we said our goodbyes to Patty (click the photo to embiggen). Good luck, and enjoy retirement!

Sunday September 24 - Steve's Greenhouse

OK kids, this is it- the very LAST 6:30 AM start of the year, as we change to a 7:30 start on October 1.  Destination is Steve's Greenhouse downtown.

In other news, this from Gary:

The Community Alliance of Seventh Avenue installed its first bike rack in the Melrose District!!

Bike Racks Coming To 7th Ave!!
By Gary LeBlanc, CASA Vice President and Project Manager

The Community Alliance of Seventh Avenue (CASA) is providing bike racks
to businesses in the Melrose area of 7th Avenue, which will tie in with the
City’s new CanalScape project and connect with bike lanes that serve
many neighborhoods.

CASA has relationships with the 7th Avenue Merchant’s Association, City of
Phoenix, the U.S. Department of HUD, Arizona State University, St. Luke's
Health Initiatives, local neighborhoods and  other organizations committed to
developing walkable, bicycling, opportunity-rich communities connected to light rail.

CASA has identified more than 40 properties where bike racks can be installed
at businesses on 7th Avenue between Camelback and Indian School Roads.
Funding for the project has been secured, and we are moving forward with
the purchase and install of these racks.  Charley Jones, President of CASA,
designed the “M” shaped rack with help from his daughter Nicole.  Many
thanks to both of you for making a design that reflects the character of the
Melrose area.  Funding was provided by the PB Bell Companies, developers
of the “The Curve” apartments at 7th Ave and Montecito, and our hats go off
to this local company for being such a great corporate neighbor.

Keep an eye out for new racks popping up in the months ahead!

Labor Day Ride

I don't have the September schedule yet, but plans have been made for a pickup ride to Tempe on Labor Day (Monday Sept. 4). Granada Park, 6:30 AM. Destination is Ncounter.

Yeah... this is going to work out just fine

While automakers focus on defending the systems in their cars against hackers, there may be other ways for the malicious to mess with self-driving cars. Security researchers at the University of Washington have shown they can get computer vision systems to misidentify road signs using nothing more than stickers made on a home printer.

Sorry to crush your dreams of riding in the back of your self-driving car...

Sunday July 30 - First Watch

We're off to the Metrocenter First Watch tomorrow. Probably be a smaller crowd than usual. Sort of have an idea for a route. See you at 6:30.

Here's an article about six bike lane projects coming to downtown neigborhoods.

Here's a video of Danny MacAskill's day out. This guy has skillz.

Tip of the hat to Gary for sending me both of these items.

Oncall Blues

I'll just say this- four days into oncall duty, and I am pretty well convinced that Operations is conducting a series of sleep-deprivation experiments.

Never going to happen...

I've said it before, I'll say it again, there is no way anyone alive today will see a driverless car out on the street.

Oh, there will be places where the technology will work- like parking shuttles at amusement parks, college or business campuses, but never out in the real world, where kids and animals run out in front of you. Where electrical lines and trees come down in storms. Where water mains burst and take out half of a street. The real world. Where we live.

Just read this, about what the "experts" think bikes will need to be in the future.

Never. Going. To. Happen.

July 9 - Wildflower Bread Co

This Sunday we're off to Wildflower Bread Company on Indian School. Would like to figure out a new route to get there, so I'll put my thinking cap on. Any ideas, shoot them at me.

Here's a pic that we snapped yesterday at NCounter in Tempe, in our red, white and blue, star-spangled yankee doodle dandiest...

Holiday ride July 4th

Yesterday at breakfast, we made plans for a July 4th ride next Tuesday. If you were there, we initially said 6:30, but after the long hot slog back from Times Square, we decided 6 AM would be a good idea to prevent a holiday heat stroke.

So, 6 AM Granada on July 4, destination NCounter in Tempe.   But first, it's New York Bagels 'n Bialys this Sunday at the usual 6:30 start.

Goodbye Jim...

I received an email this morning forwarded from Kyle Schlotfelt....

Dear Friends and Family of James "Jim" Corallo,

With heavy hearts, we are sad to share that our loving husband and father passed away on the morning of June 12th, 2017. As many of you know, he was battling stage IV renal cell carcinoma, and the complications that came with it were too much for his body to handle.

We invite you to join us to commemorate Jim's life at his memorial service this Friday, June 16th at 7:00 p.m. at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E Indian School Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85018.  Please feel free to share this message with anyone who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, our family suggests memorial contributions to Make-A-Wish Foundation or Ronald McDonald House. We appreciate your love and support.

With kind regards,
The Corallo Family
Annette, Keith, Lauren and Kelsey

June 18 - The Good Egg?

Yelp says that this location is closed, not sure why its on the schedule. However, note that there is a First Watch at Park Central Mall at that same address (3110 N. Central).  I am hoping that was what was meant, and they will be expecting us.

And by us, I mean you all. I am unable to lead this Sunday. So someone take a look at a map, and figure out a route. I'd suggest a Sunnyslope tour, or maybe loop through Arcadia and back to Central.

See you on the 25th!

May 21 - The Henry

First off, thanks to Tom for giving me and my disabled bicycle a ride home yesterday, I really appreciated it. Looks like it will need a new freehub most likely.

Now about next Sunday- I will not be able to lead the ride to The Henry. So someone's going to have to make a plan. I would suggest the Dreamy Draw, over into PV, south to Mockingbird, then the 54th St. meander alongside of Mummy Mountain, down to Camelback Inn, and west and south on McDonald/44th St. Or, you could circle around Arcadia for awhile.

Anyway, I'll be around for the May 28 ride to First Watch, and if anyone wants to ride on Memorial Day the 29th, let me know and I'll post something.

April 2 - The Smith Cafe

The April schedule is posted over there on the left, please note that our starting time moves up to 6:30 AM for the summer.

First up is The Smith. The owners are Australian, and it has some pretty good reviews. Check it out, see you at 6:30 Sunday!

Wednesday, March 22, 2017

March 26 - Wildflower Bread Company

A reminder... I will NOT be showing up on Sunday to lead the ride to Wildflower Bread Co. as I will be participating in the Bike MS event this weekend.

Remember, this week is the LAST 7:30 AM start. On April 2, we move to a 6:30 AM start. And I'll see you then. And if you have a couple of bucks burning a hole in your pocket and haven't yet donated to MS, go ahead and click that link over on the left.

See you on April 2!

Thursday, March 16, 2017

March 19 - Cracker Barrel

I'll be there to lead the ride to the Cracker Barrel this Sunday, but will be unable to stay for breakfast. We have tickets to the Padres/Reds game in Peoria, so I've got to get home for a shower first.

I will have a map that I will hand off to someone to find your way back. See ya Sunday!

Valley Bike Month coming in April

April is Bike Month in the Valley of the Sun. You can view all of the various events here, culminating with the ABC Desert Classic on April 29.

I am tentatively planning on participating, if the work thing cooperates. More information on the Desert Classic can be found here.

And as long as I'm blathering, this Sunday's destination is New York Bagels & Bialys.  The forecast looks pretty good, hopefully the tights can be put away for the season now. See ya Sunday!

March Schedule Posted

First up this month is Moon Valley Cafe, one of my favorites. And wonder of wonders, the weather looks like it might cooperate! Of course, with all the sunshine coming back, the weeds in my yard will be popping up like crazy I am sure.

See ya Sunday!

Sunday at LoLo's

Alexis took this shot of the gang on Sunday at LoLo's. Was nice to have a decent weekend, but rain is moving in this afternoon. Sigh.

I'll have the March schedule posted as soon as I get it.

Rainy Days and Mondays

Tomorrow's ride to Sylvia's La Canasta is likely going to be too wet and rainy, at least for me anyway. I'll wait until morning to decide for sure.

However, it's looking promising for that Monday holiday ride. Meet at Granada at 8 AM Monday, Jamie has a plan. I won't be there, but at least I should be able to bike to work.

By the way, up there on the left is a link to my donation page for the Bike MS Arizona event coming up March 25-26. Again this year, I will match donations up to a total of $250.

I'll leave you with a little musical interlude for this wet weekend...

Don't Call Me, Owl Call You...

Just outside a co-workers office, a pair of owls has set up housekeeping in a planter. Someone snapped a couple photos of Dad and Mom. Click the photos to embiggen.

Another Holiday Ride I Can't Do

Jamie says there's going to be a ride Monday 2/20 (Presidents Day). Same place, Granada Park at 8:00 AM. I can't make it but if you can, I believe they'll be off to Tempe.

Wednesday, February 1, 2017

Just wanted to share something that our President said this morning:

"Frederick Douglass is an example of somebody who has done an amazing job and is being recognized more and more, I notice,"

Reflect on that. Go back and re-read. Let it roll around in your head for awhile. This is the leader of the Free World. Only it sounds like the beginning of a bad essay by a really lazy high school student.

Sigh. Oh well, the new schedule for February is up over there on the left. This Sunday it's Times Square at 7th St. and Union Hills. See ya Sunday!

Who'll Stop The Rain??!

The weather's looking iffy for Sunday's ride to Miracle Mile, so if it's raining don't look for me to show up. Check that Intellicast link over to the side in the morning, that's where I'll be looking to see if there's any chance of staying warm and dry.

Found this video on the intertubes, the Finns are up to shenanigans with a 1990 Ford Fiesta. This is quite entertaining, at least to my weird sense of humor. What happens when you use Coca-Cola for motor oil? Watch and find out.

And when you're done with that one, ever see a brake disc rotor explode?

Holiday Ride - MLK Day

Jamie tells me that the plan is another holiday ride this Monday 1/16. Granada Park, 8 AM meetup. Destination is likely Tempe again. And yet again, I am unable to join in the fun. Don't let that stop you guys!

And while I'm at it, Sunday is not looking good for the ride to Miracle Mile, Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning has rain in the forecast. Maybe it will all blow to the north of us. So watch the weather, and see you Sunday

Not Yet

I don't know about you, but I've been spending most of my free time in the land of Not Yet. If you're unfamiliar with it, Not Yet is a happy place where all the bad things that seem likely to occur have not happened... yet. I like to think of it as a shimmering, shivering soap bubble whose fragile beauty is only made greater by the knowledge that it will soon burst, making way for the dark realm of You Gotta Be Kidding Me.

But not now. Not Yet.

And yes, I would love to say Not Ever, but that place doesn't exist.
