Dec 7 - Mimi's Metrocenter

Looks like tomorrow there's a big winter storm set to decend on the Valley. Hopefully the rain will wait until after morning, but chances are we'll get to sleep in.

Here's a pic from last Sunday from in front of Mimi's.

I'll leave you with the funniest thing from TV this past week- a special appearance of Darryl Hall and John Oates on The Daily Show.

I'm bailing on you this week...

So you're going to have to find your own way to the Five & Diner this Sunday the 23rd, and on Thanksgiving you've got no leader, no restaurant, no nothing. Although the club could not obtain a reservation anywhere for the holiday, might I suggest an Arcadia-area ride, and perhaps stopping at either La Grand Orange (at 40th St. and Campbell), or Over Easy (at 40th St. just south of Indian School). Both will be open Thanksgiving morning.

I'll be in the Heartland, visiting family in Nebraska for the week. Eating. That's what we do.

So if I can still fit into my bike shorts when I get back, I'll see you on the 30th.

Here's a couple pictures from my commute last week. Moonrise and sunset, captured in the Dreamy Draw. See ya on the 30th...

New Maricopa County bike map

MAG finally got around to updating the county bike map this year - it's an even bigger file to download, but it includes so much more, such as light rail stations. I've updated the link to the left as well, or just click here to download it right now.

Mimi's - Oct 12

A post-ride picture of Tony and Martin from yesterday- what a beautiful day. Autumn is finally here- I even turned off the A/C at home!

This is also your official notification that I have to skip next week's ride on the 19th, we're doing a disaster test at work. So see you on the 26th...

Life in the Big City - Vol. 6.1 update

So remember the story last month of my neighbor the astronaut who launched an electric water heater through his roof?

Well, here's what's left. I have to say I'm surprised it's down already. When it caught fire a couple years ago, it stood there for at least six months before anyone touched it.

Day 3 - Mickelson Trail Trek

Home at last. That last segment from Denver to Phoenix gets tedious.

Here's a batch of photos from Sunday. Time to go wash the muck out of the Trek.

Day 2 - Mickelson Trail Trek

Here's some more pics from todays segment from Custer to Rochford. Among them, there's the same group picture in front of the Crazy Horse Memorial. The weather was perfect today again, though tomorrow they are forecasting scattered thunderstorms, but mostly in the afternoon. We're done by noon usually, so maybe we'll stay dry.

Day 1 - Mickelson Trail Trek

Here's a couple pics from todays ride, while I wait for the shower. A beautiful sunny day today, high of about 80. I actually beat Megan into Edgemont, though not by much. But Ed and Nyle were not that far behind.

Weather looks like tomorrow will be about the same as today, as we ride north thru Hill City and into Rochford for a few beers at the world famous Moonshine Gulch saloon.

Videobombing with Sal and Richard

This is for Mike P.

For the rest of you, it's Sal and Richard from the Howard Stern Show on Sirius-XM satellite radio, goofing on CNN cameras in front of Lehman Brothers on Monday.

And now for something completely different...

All has been quiet on Big Dorky for a couple weeks. Been busy trying to get ready for the trip to South Dakota to ride the Mickelson Trail Trek next weekend (Sept. 19-21).

We only have three more 6:30 AM starts, in October we move the start time back to 7:30 AM. I will be at the park this week for the trip to Five and Diner on the rez, someone else will have to lead on the 21st.

I hope to be able to post some pics from the road, if I can find access to the intertubes in Custer SD. I know our hotel doesn't have it, but perhaps a coffeshop in town might.

Here's a picture from last Sunday, Rogerio and Laurel at US Egg. I got nothin' else. See ya Sunday.

Grand Canyon - Aug 23/24

Just returned from the GC trip, and an enjoyable time was had by all I believe. Except for the brief shower Saturday evening while heating up dinner. And the annoying French kids in the campsite next door who spent their time in camp staking out the bathrooms, waiting for their iPods, Crackberries and cellphones to recharge on the only outlet available. A guy and a girl ended up getting into some kind of shouting match about 10 PM last night. I heard "merde" several times, so I can only guess she was pissed off about something that was entirely his fault.

Here's some photos, click on them to see full size.

See ya Sunday the 31st. There is also a ride on Monday (Labor Day), but I don't know the destination yet.

For Sale - Custom Skylights, Open Floor Plan...

So my Sunday maintenance at work went well, although it took 13 and a half hours to complete, and I damn near froze to death in the server room in the process. We replaced ten disk controller cache batteries, and swapped out 45 17GB drives for 35GB drives. Only two people who read this have any idea what this means (Hi Pat! Hi Chris!).

I hate missing the Sunday club ride, and I also missed out on the pool party the wife had Sunday afternoon, with all of her family over.

I also missed out on even more neighborhood mayhem- this house about two blocks from us caught on fire Sunday afternoon and is pretty much destroyed. Click on the picture to see what real estate agent you can call to pick up this beauty real cheap.

I am not looking forward to opening up my next home insurance statement in April, once Amica's actuaries get a look at what's going on in North Phoenix...

Life in the Big City - Vol. 6

At 5:30 this morning, I was up and outside already, cleaning the pool in preparation for the niece and nephew weekend invasion. It was somewhat cloudy, with some rain showers going on to the south, but I figured it was safe enough to give the pool a good brushdown (waving a big aluminum telepole around with lightening in the area is not a good idea, as you can imagine).

So there I am, sleepily pushing some dirt down towards the main drain when I hear a loud explosion just to the southwest of the house. Thinking it was a lightening strike, I quickly dropped the pole (yeah, like THAT'S gonna save me now) and looked up to see a large cylindrical object sailing into the air, straight up, at least a hundred feet up.

Now 5:30 AM is a little bit early for someone to be mixing the four ingredients for neighborhood mayhem (that would be rednecks, propane, a garbage can and 18-pack of Bud Light), and before long, the entire fleet of news helicopters were circling over the area.

I turned on the TV to learn that the UFO I witnessed was actually a water heater which blew through the roof of a house about one block from our place, and came down about one block away from the newly ventilated home on the other side of Thunderbird Road, without hitting anyone or anything.

Here's a photo I snapped on the way to work, and here's a link to the Channel 3 news coverage.

The interesting thing is that this house (and the home next to it) partially burned down about two years ago, when the occupants were reportedly home-brewing beer on a stove in the storage area behind the garage.

BONUS VIDEO! Here's a YouTube video showing exactly what I witnessed this morning. Dang, that's some missile!

Shaw Butte

All summer long, we've had the nieces and nephews over to our house for the weekend, and all summer long I've been trying to pry them away from the TV and get some exercise. Finally, Amber (visiting from Washington) agreed to take a hike up Shaw Butte this past weekend. She scrambled all the way to the top with me, only stopping to watch a roadrunner jump around trying to pick up a lizard. Here she is near the top, to show her family back in Washington she really made it to the top.

By the way, I won't be available to lead the Sunday rides on Aug 17 (another work project) and Aug 24 as well (going on the ABC Grand Canyon trip). See ya Sunday...

Randy's - July 27

I missed out on the ride Sunday, as I needed to be at work at 7 AM for a hardware upgrade to my system (adding disk and more memory to the IBM iSeries that runs the business). So I stopped by the park to give my regrets, and snapped a couple photos for the heck of it. Here's Gary, Patty, Mike and Lee riding through the Biltmore.

More importantly, here's another pic taken this morning- the city of Phoenix is finally fixing that massive bump at the bottom (western edge) of the Dreamy Draw bike path. The deformed concrete was cut out yesterday morning, and the crew had wet down the area this morning in preparation for the concrete that should already be poured as I type this. Hooray!

New schedule for August is posted on the left, going to Mimi's this week. See you this Sunday.

Vegas, baby... Vegas

Sorry, I won't be leading the club ride to First Watch Metro Center this Sunday (7/20). I'll be on the way to Sin City to meet my old Omaha roommate Dean and his lovely wife.

Eric Laubach will most likely be leading the ride... at least he said he thought he was available to do it.

I'll leave you with this bit of funny. GraphJam is my new favorite place on the Intertubes...

July 6 - Eye Opener, Sunnyslope

Took me all week to get around to downloading the camera and getting this picture up. I'm pretty much wiped out by the time I bike home after work in this heat. I did skip riding Friday morning, as I figured at least one tunnel on the canal would be full of water.

Tomorrow it's off to US Egg. See ya at 6:30...

Holy crap, this is the funniest thing you've seen all week... trust me.

July 4 holiday ride next week...

Just got copied on an email from Josephine- she says the July 4 holiday ride will be to The Original Pancake House, 6840 E. Camelback Rd. Starting at the usual time and place (Granada Park, 6:30 AM). The picture on the right is of their famous specialty, the Dutch Baby, "an air filled delight oven baked to golden perfection and served with lemon, whipped butter and powdered sugar to create a mouthwatering blend." Mmmmmmmm...

One note- they do not take debit cards I am told.

But before that is this Sunday's ride to the IHOP at 20th St. and Baseline in Phoenix. I mapped out a route, and it appears it is 15, perhaps 16 miles one way from the park, which would make it possibly longer than the Deer Valley Airport ride.
See ya Sunday...

R.E.M. - Chicago - June 6

Finally getting around to posting these. It seems like I haven't sat down since returning to town on Saturday night.

That's my friend and old roommate from Omaha, Dan (currently residing in the Champaign-Urbana metroplex), and my brothers Ed and Jim. We all met in the windy city to see the show.

By the way, I won't be at the park on Sunday (6/15), but Gary pledges to show up and run you all up and down every hill he can find.

See you on the 22nd.
